English craftsmen have left behind them a heritage of furniture equal in beauty to any that has been produced elsewhere, and a great many of the finest pieces by Thomas Chippendale, Robert Adam and others, are displayed in our museums and in country houses open to the public, where they can be seen in a natural setting.
A great number of people wish to know more about the different styles of particular periods and the author gives a survey, from which an all-round picture emerges of the general characteristics of each individual period, at the same time giving a fascinating explanation of what, in fact, is meant by style. The period covered is from the Middle Ages to the present day, and the book is handsomely illustrated -with photographs and line drawings. The japanned bedstead on the front of the jacket is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, but came from Badminton House, Gloucestershire. It was made, c. 1754, probably by Thomas Chippendale, for the 4th Duke of Beaufort.
